Polo’s Refuge Senior Dog Retirement Home

Polo’s Refuge, CSTR’s Senior Dog Retirement Home, began as an idea that CSTR founder, Leann Lund, had when she saw how many senior Shih Tzu, Maltese and other small dogs were finding themselves in animal shelters when their families could no longer care for them.  In November 2011, and with the help of the rescue’s Facebook “fans”, friends, and family members, CSTR finished in the top 10 of a contest put on by Pepsi to win the chance at a $25,000 grant.  A proposal was submitted, putting Leann’s idea to paper, to create a home for senior dogs who would otherwise have no hope, and in December CSTR was notified that the grant proposal had been approved.  Construction began in March 2012, and the first residents of Polo’s Refuge moved in on July 1, 2012.  Visit the Polo’s Refuge Photo Album to see photos of the retirement home.

Polo’s Refuge is located in CSTR’s Tallahassee, FL program, and has ongoing expenses for the care of the dogs in their new home.  The home has fans, heating/air conditioning, a ramp/doggie door so that the dogs have access at their leisure to a very large, fenced yard, and all the comforts of their very own retirement home.  The dogs will live out the remainder of their lives here, and so will require yearly health check ups, medical care as needed, heartworm/flea preventative, quality food, etc.  The Pepsi grant stipulated that the money could be used only for the construction of the retirement home, so CSTR is dependent upon donations in order to care for the dogs in the program.
